A song written for Piaf by Louiguy/ Henri Contet, 1953. The broken hearted clown has been a familiar figure from Pierrot to Picasso's Harlequins to Pagliacci but never has the archetype been pushed to such an extreme as Piaf's clown. He clowned for "bravos" through his sorrow until it drove him to madness, violence and tragedy.
Did Piaf see herself in this clown, entertaining an audience with her grief? This song is one of the greatest vehicles for her tragic sensibility and the power of her voice. It is still being covered by many young artists today. Thank you again, philipchek of YouTube and Paris for help with the translation.
